Helicopter Tour in Bhutan: A Unique and Scenic Adventure

Helicopters are simply fascinating. These remarkable machines, once likened only to hummingbirds and insects for their ability to hover, provide an exhilarating way to travel. They can glide low over Bhutan’s shimmering rivers, vast forests, and breathtaking landscapes. For Bhutan, helicopters are more than just a thrilling mode of transport—they signify a major leap forward in the country’s transportation and commerce. The launch of Royal Bhutan Helicopter Services Ltd marked a new chapter in this landlocked nation’s history, offering both practical and tourism benefits.

Since commencing operations in November 2015, Bhutan Helicopter Services has safely flown over 1,000 travelers, clocking more than 1,500 flight hours.

Bhutan’s Geographic Challenges

Bhutan, with its lush jungles and towering Himalayan peaks, is a dream destination for many. Tourists flock to marvel at its stunning landscapes, hike its trails, and visit the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery, perched on a cliffside. Despite growing tourism, Bhutan’s rugged terrain—steep mountains, dense forests, and swift rivers—poses challenges for locals, with the country relying heavily on its extensive network of farm roads. Over 10,000 kilometers of roads have been built, but navigating the terrain remains difficult.

Helicopter Scenic Tours

Helicopter tours in Bhutan are priced per trip, accommodating up to five passengers. The scenic journey starts with a low-altitude flight over Paro Valley, showcasing fertile rice fields and the winding Paro Chhu River. You’ll fly over ancient villages and Bhutan’s iconic sites like the Paro Rinpung Dzong, a 15th-century fortress that currently houses Paro’s administrative and monastic body. Nearby, the Taa Dzong, now the National Museum, adds to the historical charm.

Next, the helicopter sweeps past the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. Seeing this marvel from the sky, clinging to the cliffside with its golden roofs and red accents, offers a breathtaking experience that can’t be matched from the ground.

The journey continues northward toward Mount Jumolhari, soaring over the ruins of the 17th-century Drugyel Dzong. Standing at 7,320 meters, Jumolhari is one of the world’s highest virgin peaks, believed to be home to deities, hence the ban on climbing. The helicopter lands at Jangothang, the mountain’s base camp, allowing for a quick snack and photo opportunity. If you’re fortunate, you might spot herds of blue sheep, native to the Himalayas, grazing on the cliffs below.

Bhutan Helicopter Services: A Versatile Solution

Royal Bhutan Helicopter Services Ltd (RBHS) was established on November 11, 2015, commemorating His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo’s 60th birthday. Operating from Paro Airport’s old hangar, RBHS has two H130 helicopters serving various roles, from transporting travelers to medical evacuations. In its first six months, RBHS transported over 400 individuals and relocated more than 40 medical patients to Thimpu.

To extend its reach, the Department of Air Transport is developing new helipads across Bhutan, with plans to utilize helicopters for medical emergencies, law enforcement, search and rescue missions, and firefighting. The service is now expanding into tourism, offering visitors a unique aerial perspective of Bhutan’s natural beauty and cultural landmarks.
